Description
When it left the factory in 1953, the watch was equipped with the signature 3, 6, 9 Explorer dial, which featured high levels of radiant Ra-226. Over time, likely due to concerns surrounding radium, the original dial and hands were replaced with non-radium components. Uniquely, the replacement was not an Explorer dial but a blank template originally designed for, most likely, the Submariner reference 5508 (famously associated with James Bond). This customization was likely done in consultation with the client, resulting in an unusual and highly distinctive appearance. The blank dial was finished with a silver Explorer signature and an ‘underline’ print, marking it as a unique service dial from the early 1960s.
Both vintage Rolex experts Eric Ku and Philipp Stahl have confirmed the above explanation of this exceptional configuration.
As if the unique dial template weren’t remarkable enough, this watch has developed one of the most stunning patinas we’ve ever encountered. The lacquered surface has transformed into a mesmerizing bubble-like mosaic, reminiscent of frozen air trapped beneath ice. This effect gives the dial an incredible sense of depth, as though it were centimeters thick. It’s a feature that captivates the eye and is almost impossible to look away from while wearing the watch.
Though our macro shots aim to showcase its beauty, nothing compares to seeing the sunlight play across this dial in person. What makes it even rarer is the uniformity of the patina—it has spread evenly across the entire surface without any sections appearing more or less affected. Upon closer inspection, as highlighted in our macro images, there are subtle signs of rust from the metal base beneath the print confirming the patina was caused by water damage.
The overall condition is good. The case shows normal signs of wear in the form of light scratches and scuffs.
Both the serial and reference number between the lug are well legible. Crystal has minor scratches.
The Cal. A296 movement received a complete overhaul in the end of 2024 and is running with good accuracy.
The watch is paired with a later 1970s Rolex ref. 78360 bracelet
