Rolex began incorporating gemstone dials into its watches in the 1970s, expanding the aesthetic range of its traditionally conservative designs. These dials were often made from materials such as lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye, malachite, and onyx, each cut from a single piece of stone. Crafting these dials required precision, as the stones were fragile and difficult to shape without breaking. The use of gemstone dials was most common in precious metal Day-Date and Datejust models, aligning with Rolex’s emphasis on luxury. Among these, the onyx dial variant for 36mm Datejusts isn’t necessarily one of the rarer gemstone dials but arguably one of the most beloved ones, with pre 1980 Datejust variants produced in limited numbers and highly sought after by collectors.
