Rolex Datejust 36 ‘Bamboo’ Bezel Rare – 1961

This extremely good looking 1961 Rolex Datejust reference 1603 in stainless steel is a refined example of early ’60s Rolex design, featuring the seldom-seen ‘bamboo’ bezel—a variant that quietly sets it apart from the standard smooth, fluted or engine-turned options of the era. Its glossy black pie-pan (curving outer edge around minute track) no-lume dial adds an extra layer of intrigue, appealing to collectors who appreciate such nuanced details. A rare combination, complemented by the ‘coffin box’ hour markers and the correct no-lume Dauphine handset. These elements come together in a dial configuration that is seldom encountered, though a handful of similar ‘bamboo’ examples have surfaced at auction over the past two decades—each with closely matching serial numbers dating to either 1959, 1960, or 1961. For those seeking a subtle yet distinctive twist on the classic vintage Datejust, we believe this example offers exactly that: aesthetics and collectability.

General information:
Watch remains in well preserved condition with an outstanding dial. The fact that this is a ‘no-lume’ watch helps with the perseveration of its gilt black glossy dial whereas other luminous examples we’ve seen have deteriorated dials.
Watch case and bracelet remain in good condition, showing little/normal signs of stretch. Although most likely slightly polished in its past, the case shows beefy lugs showing its original finishing and bevels. The Cal.1560 movement has just undergone a full movement service (25th July 2025) by ‘Tempus Watchmakers’ and runs with perfect accuracy and amplitude.
Accompanied by original rare green leather Rolex coffin box, three extra links and Rolex swing tag.
